Munger, Tolles & Olson Associate Ruby Garrett to Speak at Georgetown Law Center

Today, associate Ruby Garrett will be a featured speaker on the panel, Breonna Taylor Three Years Later: Reflections on Litigation and Organizing, hosted by the Georgetown Law Center.

Ms. Garrett will be featured on the panel alongside her client Mr. Kenneth Walker III, boyfriend of the late Breonna Taylor, and co-counsels Frederick Moore of Grossman Green PLLC and Cliff Sloan of the Georgetown University Law Center. The panelists will discuss Breonna Taylor’s legacy and the role of litigation in creating change.

A team of MTO attorneys, led by Ms. Garrett, represented Mr. Walker in his federal lawsuit against the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department following the unlawful police raid that led to Ms. Taylor’s death in 2020.

The Section 1983 civil rights lawsuit sought damages for the fabrication of evidence to obtain a warrant for Ms. Taylor’s residence; the execution of the warrant in violation of the constitutional “knock and announce” requirement; and the use of excessive force against Mr. Walker. In December 2022, Mr. Walker reached a $2 million settlement with the city to resolve the litigation.

The Munger, Tolles & Olson team also included partners Don Verrilli, Jacob Kreilkamp and Robyn Bacon, and associates Dahlia Mignouna and Brendan Gants.

Today’s panel falls on the heels of the Department of Justice’s findings of civil rights violations by the Louisville Metro Police Department and Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government. The DOJ’s findings included the use of excessive force, conducting searches based on invalid warrants, unlawful discrimination against Black people in its enforcement activities, and the execution of search warrants without knocking or announcing.
